Activating Microsoft Office 2016 Home and Business for Mac

This guide is exclusively about activating the Office 2016 Home and Business package on a Mac computer. It does not describe the installation process. If the package was downloaded from the Mac App Store, activating it with a one-time Office 2016 Home and Business license will not work. This edition can only be activated in the version downloaded directly from Microsoft.

Activating with a Product Key

In the case of Office 2016 Home and Business for Mac, the product key is not usually entered directly into the terminal. Instead, it is assigned to a Microsoft account, and then the package is activated by logging into the Office application.

GUI Method

  1. Open the Microsoft activation page and log in to the Microsoft account to which the license will be assigned.
  2. Enter the product key without hyphens.

  1. Launch Word.
  2. Go to Word > About Word.
  3. Confirm that you are using version 16.16.x, which is Office 2016 for Mac.
  4. Check if there is no prompt for activation and if the application allows creating and saving files without limited functionality.

Additionally, you can check the application version in the Terminal:

Troubleshooting Activation

0xD0001043

Activation server error. First, restart your Mac, then try again. If the problem persists, remove old license data and reactivate.

0xD000001c

The Mac computer name contains invalid characters. Change the computer name in system settings, restart your Mac, and reactivate.

Installation limit reached

The account has reached the activation limit for this license. Log in to your Microsoft account and check which device the license is associated with. In older single-version licenses, a phone call may be required.

No license found

The package is running on a different Microsoft account than the one assigned to the key, or the license was not properly linked after entering the key.

You need to activate Office for Mac within X days

Office is activated, but still shows a prompt. Usually, clearing saved license tokens in the Keychain and logging in again helps.

What to Do When the Key Does Not Work

  1. Check if the key is intended exactly for Office 2016 Home and Business for Mac, not for Windows, Office 365, MSDN, or a volume license.
  2. Ensure the key has not been previously assigned to another Microsoft account.
  3. Verify you are using a package downloaded from Microsoft, not from the Mac App Store.
