Activation of ESET Home Security Premium — 1 Device, 12 Months

ESET Home Security Premium is activated through the ESET application or the ESET HOME account, and not through Windows system tools. In the case of antivirus software, do not use ospp.vbs or slmgr.vbs, as they are used to activate other products and do not activate the ESET license.

Before You Begin

Prepare:

  • the activation key, license code, or ESET HOME account details,
  • a stable internet connection,
  • administrator privileges in the Windows system,
  • the ESET Home Security Premium program installed.

If you already have a manufacturer's account, it's a good idea to log in to the ESET HOME panel earlier and check if the license has been correctly added to the account.

Method 1: Activation in the ESET Graphical Interface

This is the simplest and recommended method.

  1. Launch ESET Home Security Premium from the Start menu or from the icon next to the clock.
  2. In the main program window, go to the Help and Support or Subscription / Product Activation section.
  3. Choose one of the options:
    • Use an activation key,
    • Log in to your ESET HOME account.
  4. Enter the received activation key or log in to the account to which the license is assigned.
  5. Confirm the activation and wait for the success message.
  6. After activation, update the program modules.

After successful completion, you should see a status indicating that the product is active, and real-time protection is working correctly.

Method 2: Activation Using CMD

In the case of ESET, the command line is not used to enter the license key as in Microsoft products. However, CMD can be used to quickly open the program, the manufacturer's portal, and check the status of services after activation.

2.1. Launching the ESET Interface from CMD

Open Command Prompt as an administrator and use:

start "" "C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Security\ecmds.exe"

If this path does not work, launch the program from the Start menu and proceed to activation from the GUI level. In different ESET editions, the directory names may differ slightly.

2.2. Opening the Manufacturer's Portal from CMD

You can complete the license activation through the manufacturer's portal by opening it with the command:

start https://home.eset.com

After logging in:

  1. add the license to your ESET HOME account,
  2. assign it to the current device,
  3. return to the ESET application and log in to the same account.

2.3. Checking if the ESET Service is Running

After activation, you can verify the operation of the services:

sc query ekrn

If the service is running, you will see a response similar to:

STATE              : 4  RUNNING

2.4. Checking ESET Processes

tasklist | findstr /I "egui ekrn"

If protection is working, you will usually see the processes related to the interface and service of the program running.

  • Product name: ESET Home Security Premium,
  • Licence variant: 1 device / 12 months,
  • Activation key or email address used for purchase,
  • Description of the error message on the screen,
  • Information on whether the licence has been activated before.

Telephone support is particularly useful when the system reports an occupied licence, incorrect code, or account synchronisation issues with ESET HOME.

Verification Commands after Activation

After completing the activation, check the programme's status using the following commands:

sc query ekrn
tasklist | findstr /I "egui ekrn"
wmic service where "name='ekrn'" get Name,State,StartMode
powershell -command "Get-Process egui,ekrn -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue"
start https://home.eset.com

The last command does not check the local service, but allows you to confirm whether the device and licence are visible on the manufacturer's account.

How to Verify that the Licence is Active

After activation, check the following three elements:

  • The ESET window displays information about an active subscription,
  • The signature databases and programme modules update without errors,
  • The ekrn service is running in the RUNNING state.

Additionally, in the ESET HOME portal, the device should be assigned to an active licence.

Most Common Errors and Solutions

1. Incorrect Activation Key

This usually means a typo or incorrect code entry. Re-enter the key without additional spaces. If you purchased a licence in the form of a registration code, first replace it according to the seller's instructions or add it through your ESET HOME account.

2. Licence is Already in Use on the Maximum Number of Devices

The 1 device package only allows activation on one device. Log in to ESET HOME and remove the old, unused device or ask support for help in releasing the device.

3. Communication Error with the Activation Server

Check your internet connection, firewall, proxy server, and system date correctness. Often, restarting the computer and retrying the activation after a few minutes helps.

4. Unable to Log in to ESET HOME

Verify your email address and password, as well as check if the account has been confirmed by an activation message. If necessary, use the password reset option on the manufacturer's website.

5. Activation Failed Due to Incorrect System Date and Time

Set automatic time synchronisation in Windows and try again. Time discrepancies can block communication with licence servers.

6. Product is Active in the Portal, but the Programme Still Shows No Activation

Log out and log back in to the ESET application, restart your computer, and then force module updates. Also, make sure you are logging in to the same ESET HOME account to which the licence is assigned.

Important Note

ESET Home Security Premium is a consumer product activated in the ESET application or through the ESET HOME manufacturer's portal. Do not use commands like:

slmgr.vbs
ospp.vbs
