Error 0x80070005: Access Denied — Elevated Privileges Required

This error occurs in: Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server, Office 2019, Office 2021, Office 2024.

Cause

User Account Control (UAC) blocks the activation process from running without administrator privileges. The most common error when running slmgr.vbs from a standard command prompt.

Symptoms

• During activation, the message appears: "Access denied — elevated privileges required"
• Error code: 0x80070005
• English version: "Access denied. The requested action requires elevated privileges"

Step-by-Step Solution

Right-click on 'Command Prompt' and select 'Run as administrator'. Then, run slmgr.vbs again. For Office, run as admin and use ospprearm.exe.

Solution for Office

1. Open any Office application (Word, Excel)
2. File → Account → Change product key
3. Enter the key from KluczeSoft
4. Click Activate

cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
cscript ospp.vbs /act

Solution for Windows Server

1. Open PowerShell as administrator
2. Enter the key:

slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

1. Activate:

slmgr /ato

1. Check the status:

slmgr /xpr

Verification

After performing the steps, check if the activation was successful:

• Windows: Settings → System → Activation → should be "Windows is activated"
• Or: slmgr /xpr in the command prompt
• Office: File → Account → Status: "Product activated"
• Or: cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus
