Error 0x8007007B: DNS name does not exist
This error occurs in: Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2022.
Cause
The KMS client cannot find the KMS server SRV record in DNS. This often happens after a network change, in home environments (where there is no KMS server) or when the DNS record is outdated.
Symptoms
- During activation, the message appears: "DNS name does not exist"
- Error code:
0x8007007B - English version: "DNS name does not exist"
Step-by-step solution
If you don't have a KMS server, switch to a MAK key. Manually specify the KMS server: slmgr.vbs /skms <server_name:port>. In a company network, contact your IT administrator.
Solution for Windows Server
- Open PowerShell as administrator
- Enter the key:
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
- Activate:
slmgr /ato
- Check the status:
slmgr /xpr
Verification
After completing the steps, check if the activation was successful:
- Windows: Settings → System → Activation → should be "Windows is activated"
- Or:
slmgr /xprin the command line
Still not working?
If the above steps did not help:
- Check the date and time — they must be correct (an incorrect date can block activation)
- Temporarily disable antivirus and try again
- Check your internet connection — online activation requires a connection to Microsoft servers
