Error 0xC004E016: Product key is already in use
This error occurs in: Windows 10, Windows 11.
Cause
This product key is already activated on another computer or Microsoft account. Retail keys allow installation on only one computer at a time.
Symptoms
- During activation, the message appears: "Product key is already in use"
- Error code:
0xC004E016 - English version: "The product key has already been used"
Step-by-step solution
If you are transferring Windows to a new computer, first deactivate it on the old one: slmgr.vbs /upk. If the key was purchased from an intermediary, it may be illegal — contact the seller.
Method 1: Reactivation through Settings
- Open Settings → System → Activation
- Click Troubleshoot (if available)
- Click Change product key
- Enter the key from KluczeSoft and click Next → Activate
Method 2: Activation through command line
Open Command Prompt as administrator and enter:
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
slmgr /ato
Replace XXXXX-... with your product key.
Method 3: Phone activation
If online activation does not work:
slui 4
Call the displayed number and follow the instructions.
Verification
After performing the steps, check if the activation was successful:
- Windows: Settings → System → Activation → should be "Windows is activated"
- Or:
slmgr /xprin the command line

- Check the date and time — they must be correct (incorrect date may block activation)
- Temporarily disable antivirus and try again
- Check your internet connection — online activation requires a connection to Microsoft servers
