Before You Begin

Microsoft Windows Server 2022 Datacenter is the highest edition of Microsoft's server operating system, primarily designed for highly virtualized environments, data centers, and infrastructure where scale, security, and unlimited Hyper-V virtualization matter. It's the right choice when planning multiple virtual machines, cluster deployments, Storage Spaces Direct, Software-Defined Networking, or advanced hybrid scenarios with Azure.

Windows Server 2022 was released on August 18, 2021, and is covered by the Fixed Lifecycle policy. Mainstream support lasts until October 13, 2026, and extended support until October 14, 2031. This means it remains a secure and supported platform for production deployments.

At KluczeSoft, delivery is digital, usually via email. The customer receives a license key, installation instructions, access to the installation file or a download source, as well as a VAT invoice and a software legality statement. This allows you to go from purchase to activation in just a few minutes.

System Requirements

The minimum hardware requirements for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter are as follows:

ComponentMinimum
Processor1.4 GHz, 64-bit, x64 compatible
CPU InstructionsNX, DEP, CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF, PrefetchW, POPCNT, SSE4.2, SLAT
RAM2 GB for Server Core, 2 GB for Desktop Experience, practically recommended 4 GB or more
Virtual Machineat least 1280 MB RAM recommended for installation
Disk32 GB of free space
Network Card1 Gb/s Ethernet
Firmware / SecurityUEFI, Secure Boot, TPM 2.0 optional or required for some features
GraphicsSuper VGA 1024 × 768 or higher for versions with a graphical interface

In practice, for a virtualization host, it's worth adopting significantly higher parameters than the minimum, especially more RAM, fast SSD/NVMe, and a processor with a large number of cores.

Downloading the Installer

It's safest to use the installer provided by KluczeSoft or from the official Microsoft source. If you need a test image, Microsoft offers Windows Server 2022 Evaluation in ISO and VHD formats. The test version can later be converted to a production version after entering a valid key.

Before downloading, select the appropriate installation variant:

Server Core

Smaller attack surface, fewer resources, preferred for administrators working remotely.

Server with Desktop Experience

Full graphical interface, more convenient for initial deployment and local administration.

Step-by-Step Installation

1. Prepare the Media

Burn the ISO to a USB drive or attach the image to a virtual machine in Hyper-V, VMware, or Proxmox.

2. Run the Installer

Boot the server from the media, select the language, keyboard layout, and click Install now.

3. Choose the Edition

Select Windows Server 2022 Datacenter or Windows Server 2022 Datacenter (Desktop Experience).

4. Choose the Installation Type

For a new server, select Custom: Install Microsoft Server operating system only.

5. Specify the Disk

Create a system partition or select a previously prepared volume. The installer will copy files and restart the server several times.

6. Set the Administrator Password

After the first start, create a strong password for the Administrator account.

7. Perform Initial Configuration

Set the server name, IP address, updates, Hyper-V role, and other roles required in the environment.

Activation

Activation is best performed after connecting the server to the internet and installing the latest updates.

Activation via GUI

In the version with a graphical interface, go to Settings > System > Activation, select the product key change, enter the received key, and confirm activation. If online activation fails, run telephone activation with the command:

slui 4

Then select the country and call 00 800 121 1654.

Activation via CMD

Run the Command Prompt as an administrator and enter exactly:

slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
slmgr.vbs /ato

The first command installs the product key, and the second forces online activation. This scheme is correct for Windows and Windows Server.

Activation Verification

After activation, check the system status with the commands:

slmgr.vbs /dli
slmgr.vbs /xpr

/dli shows basic license information, and /xpr informs whether the system is permanently activated. If necessary, you can also use slmgr.vbs /dlv to see the full licensing details.

Troubleshooting

Error 0xC004F050

The key is invalid or does not match the installed edition. Most often, this is due to an attempt to activate Standard with a Datacenter key or vice versa.

Error 0xC004E016

The entered key does not work for this version of the system. Check if the installed edition is exactly Windows Server 2022 Datacenter.

Error 0xC004F213

The system does not have a properly installed product key. Enter it again with the command slmgr.vbs /ipk.

Error 0x80072F8F

There is a problem with the date, time, certificates, or TLS connection. Set the correct system time, synchronize NTP, and try again.

Error 0xC004C008

The key has been used the maximum number of times. In such a situation, telephone activation often helps, which can be done by calling 00 800 121 1654.

Error 0x8007232B

The server is trying to activate through KMS, but it does not find the KMS host in DNS. This is typical when using an incorrect volume key type. In the case of retail or ESD licenses, use the correct key and repeat slmgr.vbs /ipk and slmgr.vbs /ato.

Evaluation Version Expiration Message

If you installed a trial version, activation alone may not always be enough. Sometimes, it is necessary to convert the evaluation edition to retail before activating it with the correct key.

Note on CAL

CAL licenses are not software or an installation key. CAL is a licensing document that authorizes users or devices to legally access server services.

Version Comparison

Below is a quick comparison of the most commonly chosen Windows Server 2022 editions in the KluczeSoft offer:

If the server is to be a host for a larger number of virtual machines, Datacenter usually turns out to be the most reasonable choice in terms of cost and administration.
